Parents' guide to choosing a tutor

1. Decide what you need

Catching up, exam prep (SATs, 11+, GCSE, A-level), stretching an able child, or specialist SEN/dyslexia support. Small groups at a centre suit many children and cost less; one-to-one suits gaps, exam technique and SEN.

3. Questions to ask

4. Safeguarding and DBS checks

Private tutoring is largely unregulated. Tutors don't legally need a DBS check, so ask to see one, ideally an enhanced check. Check the date and name match photo ID. For home or online lessons, stay nearby or in the same room, keep lessons on agreed platforms, and avoid private messaging between tutor and child. Read government guidance: Keeping children safe in out-of-school settings.

5. Try a trial lesson

Many providers (including Brilliant Minds, Explore Learning and MyTutor) offer a free trial or intro chat. Ask your child afterwards whether they felt comfortable and understood the explanations. Review after 4–6 weeks.
